Ordination of a deacon for Sierra Leone

On Sunday 7 August e.t., the Venerable Monsignor. On August 7, August 7, 2014, Metropolitan George of Accra, with the permission and blessing of Patriarch Theodoros of Alexandria and the sympathy of His Eminence Fr. Themistocles Adamopoulos, Patriarchal Commissioner of Sierra Leone, ordained Theodore Sho-Sawyer of Sierra Leone as Deacon at the Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Saviour in Accra, the capital of Ghana. The new Deacon, married and a father of 3 children, attended intensive courses in Liturgy and Doctrine at the St. Basil’s Seminary which operates in a building within the Cathedral courtyard and is run by Ghana’s High Priest Commissioner Fr. Joseph Kwame Lambi. His Eminence, in his address, referred to the Gospel passage, stressing among other things that the life of a Christian should be simple and unpretentious, just as Christ’s was and calling on the new Deacon to faithfully follow the Lord’s example, His disciples and the Saints of the Church, to be humble and simple and as a dedicated soldier of Christ to strive hard to carry the message of the Gospel and the flame of Orthodoxy to Sierra Leone.

 

Calls to Tema

In the afternoon of the same day His Eminence chanted the Canon of Supplication to the Virgin Mary at the Holy Church of St. Nicholas in the coastal town of Tema. Among others present at the service were the captain Mr. Panagiotis Theodoropoulos and the crew of the merchant ship C/V Irenes Rainbow of the shipping company Tsakos S.A. After the service, a trisagion was held for the repose of the late Maria Tsakos. Finally, the governor donated to the church wooden carved icons of St. Nicholas and St. Marina as well as a sum of money to provide a soup kitchen for the poor children of the region. The Church was erected under the care of Captain Panagiotis Tsakos and was inaugurated in 2008 by His Beatitude.
