The Mission in Central Tanzania
His Eminence Metropolitan Agathonikos of Arusha and Central Tanzania attended an event of the Orthodox Missionary Fraternity and spoke about the joys and difficulties of missionary ministry in East Africa.
The Metropolitan emphasized that missionary work is the sowing of the Word of God. The Word, he said, bears fruit when it is founded on sacrifice, humility, and love, even towards enemies. He recalled the teaching of the Church Fathers that the soul is purified through temperance and love, and thanked the Fraternity for its continuous support.
The General Archiepiscopal Commissioner, Fr. Maximos, presented the report on the Metropolis’s activities. With the support of the Fraternity, a primary school was renovated this year, whose classrooms lacked windowpanes, floors, and doors, and a borehole was constructed to provide the children with drinking water. The church of Saint Stylianos in a remote village was also renovated.

In Dodoma, the new administrative capital of Tanzania, the Church of the Holy Trinity was completed, and the first Orthodox Christians were baptized. Additionally, two houses for priests were built in villages far from urban centers, and the monthly support for the clinic of the medical center, which operates recognized by state authorities, continued.
For the upcoming period, the Metropolis of Arusha aims to complete the Church of the Theotokos in Arusha, so that it can be consecrated by the Patriarch of Alexandria within 2027, while a technical school and a theological seminary are planned for the same site.
