A new well for the world’s poorest people
The construction of another hand-pumped well, funded by the Fraternity, has been completed in the Holy Diocese of Juba and South Sudan. The well, built under the supervision of Bishop Konstantinos of Juba in the Orthodox community of Saint Nicholas, in the Amadi region, is the second well funded by the Fraternity in this country and cost 10,000 euros.
The Holy Diocese of Juba, with jurisdiction over South Sudan, is undoubtedly among the poorest dioceses worldwide, as South Sudan ranks last, 193rd out of 193 countries, in the UN Human Development Index. It is, in other words, the most underdeveloped country in the world.
Bishop Konstantinos closely monitored the construction stages, from drilling to the installation of the hand pump. The following photos capture the moment when residents of the area gather for the first time around this well, filling their containers with the water that now flows abundantly from the pump. The well will serve the clean, potable water needs of approximately 500 families.
