Missionary Presentations in Thessaloniki Schools
For yet another year, presentations continued in Thessaloniki schools by specialized personnel of the Orthodox Foreign Mission Fraternity.
The latest example involved presentations to the 3rd grade of the 7th Junior High School of Thessaloniki. Initially, the young students were informed about the multifaceted missionary work of the Eastern Orthodox Church and the pivotal role played by the city of Thessaloniki, highlighting the first missionary to Africa, Saint Chrysostomos Papasarantopoulos, and a multitude of other missionaries. Furthermore, the invaluable contribution of Civil Society to the substantial support of missionaries’ work was emphasized, as was Thessaloniki’s pioneering role with the establishment of the world’s first missionary association, the Orthodox Foreign Mission Fraternity.
This was followed by a screening of a half-hour documentary featuring original footage from the mission field in Indonesia, Tanzania, Kenya, Cameroon, and Madagascar. The students’ interest was touching and manifested in a lively discussion.
The presentations are conducted within the framework of the curriculum “Active Citizen Initiatives,” during Physical Education, Skills Workshops, Geology-Geography, History, and Social and Political Education classes in Junior High School, or Political Education, Introduction to the Principles of Computer Science, Physical Education in Senior High School. The work of the Orthodox Foreign Mission has historically had a strong spiritual and social footprint with a direct connection to Sustainable Development Goals 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 10, 16, and 17.
