Interview of the President of the Fraternity on Focus FM
On Sunday, April 19, the President of the Fraternity, Mr. Charalambos Metallidis, gave an interview to radio station Focus FM, on the show of journalist Ms. Olga Tzetzi.
Mr. Metallidis spoke about the history and work of the Fraternity, which was founded in 1963 following the exhortations of Saint Chrysostomos Papasarantopoulos, the first modern Orthodox missionary in Africa. He recalled that the Saint went to East Africa at an advanced age and with failing health, despite the objections of many, feeling this mission as a divine command. His letters from Uganda to his spiritual children in Thessaloniki were the impetus for the founding of the Fraternity, initially named “The Friends of Uganda.”
Referring to the current work, Mr. Metallidis described the multifaceted activities of the Fraternity: sending containers with humanitarian aid, building churches and schools, operating orphanages, digging wells for drinking water, and translating sacred texts into English and French for the needs of the missions. He particularly emphasized the importance of education for the future of Africa, as well as the provision of clean water, which saves lives from diseases such as typhoid and malaria.
The President also referred to the regular events organized by the Fraternity on the second Sunday of each month in our hall, where missionaries from Africa and beyond share their experiences of their work with us. Finally, he spoke about the volunteer opportunities offered by the Fraternity to everyone, from loading containers to translating texts.
Those wishing to participate in the Fraternity’s activities can call 2310279910 or send a message through the Contact Form.
We warmly thank the excellent Ms. Olga Tzetzi for her sensitivity and for giving us the opportunity to speak about the mission’s work to the listeners of Focus FM.
