Event for Saint Chrysostomos Papasarantopoulos in Thessaloniki
The Orthodox Foreign Mission Fraternity organized an event for its spiritual founder, Saint Chrysostomos Papasarantopoulos, who was recently canonized by the Patriarchate of Alexandria.
The guest speaker was His Eminence Metropolitan Chariton of Kananga, who spoke movingly about the life and work of the Saint, who in 1960, at the age of 57, decided to leave everything behind and dedicate the rest of his life to the evangelization of Africa.
Despite his physical problems and adverse conditions, Saint Chrysostomos reached Congo, where with humility, love, and self-sacrifice, he laid the foundations of the Orthodox Church in the region.
His Eminence emphasized the joy of the faithful in Kananga, where the saint’s tomb is located, upon hearing of his canonization.
Subsequently, the president of the Fraternity, Mr. Charalambos Metallidis, spoke, stressing that the Saint’s work was pioneering and laid the foundations for all modern Orthodox missions on the African continent.
The event was enriched with songs by the youth choir LYCHNOS of OCHA Apolytrosis, which presented its new song “Missionary of Africa” dedicated to Saint Chrysostomos, in its first public performance.
