A new well in Jinja
The biblical narrative of the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt to the Promised Land is a timeless example of faith, trial, and divine providence. During their journey through the inhospitable desert, the lack of water led the people to despair and grumble against Moses. At a critical moment, God intervened: He commanded Moses to strike a rock in front of the elders of Israel, and from this hard, barren mass, abundant water gushed forth to quench the thirst of the entire community. This miraculous act, recorded in the Book of Exodus (chapter 17), was not merely a solution to a practical problem, but a testament to God’s love and continuous care for His people. This rock, from which life sprang, became a symbol of a life-giving source and hope amidst absolute hardship.
Today, thousands of years later and on another continent, the Orthodox Foreign Mission continues to bring hope and life to regions plagued by the lack of basic necessities, such as in East Africa, where access to clean water remains a daily challenge.
The Orthodox Foreign Mission Brotherhood responded to this need. In the Diocese of Jinja and Eastern Uganda, under the guidance of Bishop Silvester, our Brotherhood funded another well to address water scarcity. These wells do not only provide water. They improve health, allow children to stay in school, and become centers of community life.
Just as the desert rock was transformed into a source of salvation, so too does Christian love transform barren land into a place of blessing. The donation of wells is the modern expression of providence and solidarity, proving that faith, when put into action, can bring life even in the most difficult circumstances.
