Spiritual shelter for the young people of Yaoundé

Dear brothers,

Rejoice in the Lord always! I have previously mentioned to you the importance of the presence of the Church of St. Demetrios and the Holy Trinity in the capital of Cameroon, Yaounde, which was built with the generous donation of the Brotherhood. These two Churches have been in regular operation since October 2011 with a specific schedule of services and Divine Liturgies four times a week with a relevant programme of sermons and talks by all the clergy. Already the presence of our Church has been felt in the centre of the city and we thank God for this blessing.

Always thinking of furthering our humble missionary effort, we seek more means of supporting the work of the gospel. We have always thought that we could create a centre which could attract the interest of the young people to reach the Orthodox Church, and this because of the proximity of the Holy Church of St. Demetrios to two major universities. Hundreds of students roam the area waiting for their classes to begin and, due to the fact that the University halls are not sufficient for all the students, half of them are waiting for the first group to finish so that they can continue in the same hall.

So we thought to create an open Library – Reading Room with computers and links to electronic libraries from all over the world via the internet and this library is open to students. We believe that it could work positively for our missionary effort and in the long run we will have many positive results, because by offering a spiritual shelter for the new world, at the same time the Orthodox Church is made known, as long as the Church is located in the same place.

The surrounding area of the Church is too small for this, so the idea was put on hold. Recently we were approached by a neighbour and offered to sell us the neighbouring plot of land of 365 m² for 23.000 €. We consider it a unique opportunity.

We know that times are difficult and there are financial constraints everywhere, but we hope that the Lord never abandons the Apostolic work, which is, after all, the core of the mystery of His incarnation and humbly a matter of our own silver existence.

With the Lord’s love and blessings to all the members of the Brotherhood,
Cameroon Gregory
