Changes in the Patriarchate of Alexandria

The Holy and Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Alexandria met today, November 21, 2012, in ordinary session, under the Presidency of the Holy See of Pope and Patriarch Theodoros II, in the Conference Hall of the Holy Synod.

Before the Session, a Divine Liturgy was held at the Patriarchal Chapel of Agioi Theodoroi. The meeting then began. His Beatitude declared the opening of the proceedings, addressing the Synod members.

Through the issuance of Patriarchal and Synodal Decrees, the elevation of the Holy Diocese of Madagascar to a Metropolis, as well as the Holy Diocese of Sierra Leone, renamed the Holy Diocese of Guinea, took place.

This was followed by the filling of the vacant Holy Metropolis of Leontopolis, the Holy Metropolises of Guinea and Accra, as well as the Holy Diocese of Burundi and Rwanda and the Holy Diocese of Brazzaville and Gabon, created in 2010.

  • The new Bishop of Leontopolis was elected the new Metropolitan of Leontopolis, Theoph.
  • The new Bishop of Guinea was elected by transfer the hitherto Ven. Metropolitan George of Accra has been elected as the new Bishop of Guinea.
  • The new Bishop of Accra was elected as the new Metropolitan of Accra. Bishop Savas of Burundi and Rwanda.
  • The new Bishop of Burundi and Rwanda, Mons. Archimandrite Innocent Biacatoda.
  • The first Bishop of the Holy Diocese of Brazzaville and Gabon was elected unanimously, Mons. Archimandrite Panteleimon Arathymos, Chief Clerk of the Holy Synod.
